Trends in Design: The Herringbone Pattern
History always has a way of repeating itself and patterns in flooring are no different. The herringbone pattern has been noted as far back as ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire. Ancient road systems found that this pattern strengthened the structure of the road.
This pattern consists of multiple rectangles or parallelograms interlocked in varying ratios. Fun fact: Herringbone got its name from its likeness to the skeletal bones of a herring fish. Thankfully we think it looks much prettier than dead fish!
The current trends put a new spin on the old and often have us putting what was once on the floor on a wall. All of a sudden what’s old is new again! In kitchens and bathrooms the backsplash is often a place where people like to show a little more flair and personality. The herringbones’ ability to add intricate features with a variety of material options lends itself to being a fabulous pattern for that added touch!
